Tobagging in the Black Forest Germany

River cruising is one of my passions, and AmaWaterways is hands down one of my favorite river cruise lines. When I wanted to introduce my husband and son to the world of river cruising, I knew a sailing with AmaWaterways combined with Adventures by Disney (ABD) would be the perfect way to do so.

In June 2024, we set off on the Rhine River Cruise, from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, for an unforgettable family experience.Although we were originally set to embark from Basel, heavy rains forced a change of plans, and we started our journey in Strasbourg, France instead. ABD made the transition seamless, providing a coach transfer from our pre-cruise hotel, which was a beautiful property with an excellent breakfast. I loved the convenience of booking through ABD, as it included airport transfers—no need to stress about transportation after a long flight. Our ABD representative met us at the airport, and we were quickly whisked away to our hotel in comfort.

The next day, we boarded our AmaWaterways ship in Strasbourg, where we were greeted with a delicious lunch. Since this was an ABD sailing, there were Disney-inspired touches throughout, like Mickey Mouse-shaped sandwiches, which delighted my son.

Due to high water levels, we were transferred to a different AmaWaterways ship, but our staterooms remained the same, and we continued on our adventure without a hitch. We had two staterooms—one with a sliding door that felt like a balcony and another with a fixed window. It was great to have the space to spread out, and having two bathrooms was a bonus!

After spending two nights in Strasbourg, we made our way up the river, visiting incredible ports along the way.Choosing excursions was tough because there were so many great options, but we especially loved Heidelberg Castle and the Black Forest, where we took a thrilling toboggan ride and visited a centuries-old farm. It was fascinating to learn how people lived hundreds of years ago, and we even made butter and part of a cuckoo clock! One of my favorite experiences was the Mechanical Music Museum in Rüdesheim.

The ABD guides were fantastic, and I loved sailing through the picturesque Rhine River Valley, dotted with castles and charming towns. Our final stop was Amsterdam, where we spent two nights. The included excursions were fantastic, but after an action-packed journey, we took it easy and enjoyed some downtime. If you can, I recommend extending your trip in Amsterdam, as there’s so much to see and do.

If you're considering a Rhine River cruise—or any river cruise—I’d be delighted to help you find the perfect itinerary to match your travel style and needs. Let’s make your river cruise dreams come true!
